What is Cold Laser Therapy?
In Cold Laser Therapy a laser supplies light energy to soft tissues which effects certain chemical processes that results in faster healing of injured tissues. Our cold laser delivers a specific wavelength and intensity to penetrate beyond the surface to treat tissues several inches into the body.
What is it NOT?
Unlike lasers used in surgery or dermatology, this therapy uses a laser with a low enough intensity so tissues are not heated or burned. While the laser appears red to the eye it is NOT red light therapy (like you see advertised in catalogs for hair growth and skin problems). Red light devices are often called “lasers” in advertising when they are not.
Is it safe?
Cold Laser therapy is very safe, and has been used for decades. It was approved by the FDA in 2002. Since then, advances in technology have made laser units much more efficient and accessible. Cold laser treatment that took 30 to 40 minutes to do just 20 years ago is now possible in just minutes with modern laser equipment. Since improper equipment use could lead to problems, it is best provided under the direction of trained healthcare professional.
- How many treatments will I need? Generally, 8-10 treatments over 2-3 weeks in conjunction with physical therapy are needed to get the best results.
- How long does it take? If your therapist recommends Cold Laser as part of your treatment you can can schedule 15 minute laser therapy only appointments between or following your therapy visits.
- How much does it cost? Cold Laser Therapy is $40 per session. Patients with a 10 visit package, may swap one PT visit to cover four laser sessions.
