Nerves – Part 2
To create and control our movement in space we need a system to collect data on where our parts are in space and how they are moving, to send messages to the muscles, and to make decisions on what to do next. That system is made of neurons (individual nerve cells) and nerves (strings of individual neurons bundled side by side). The nervous system is divided into the central nervous system, made of the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system which is everything not brain and spinal cord.

Let’s Talk About Tendons
Let's review the series on what makes movement possible. So far we learned bones form the hard struts and girders of the body which are used as levers to let us move. Ligaments keep the levers in constant relationship with each other and define how we move at each...

What exactly IS a ligament anyway? And what’s the big deal if I injure one?
I mentioned in my last post that joints are the place where bones meet. But they don’t meet in any random place that varies day to day, they meet at the same place all the time. Your leg does not bend at a different place every day. The reason for this is ligaments....

Alexander Technique
Why do we move the way we do? The short answer is - because we choose to. Why we make those choices, however, is the rub. We may move to avoid pain, or because something is weak, or because it feels good, or it is just how our body shape allows us to. Most of all...

What Would It Take to Get You to Change Your Mind?
What Would It Take to Get You to Change Your Mind? They say life is all about change. We are told we need to embrace change, that change is the only constant in life. The clichés go on ad nauseam. Yet we also hear praises for being steady as a rock, being able to stay...
